Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Child marriage remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, particularly in rural regions where traditional practices and socio-cultural beliefs prevail. Media advocacy has become an essential tool in addressing this issue by raising awareness, educating communities, and influencing public opinion. In recent years, both traditional media (radio, television, newspapers) and digital media (social media platforms) have been utilized in various campaigns aimed at reducing the prevalence of child marriage (Yusuf & Ahmed, 2023). In Rimi Local Government Area, Katsina State, child marriage is deeply rooted in cultural norms and economic factors, and although media campaigns have been initiated to counter these practices, the effectiveness of these campaigns remains a matter of concern. Research indicates that while media advocacy can shift attitudes towards child marriage, its impact on changing behaviors is often limited without the support of complementary community-based interventions (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2024). This study investigates the effectiveness of media advocacy in preventing child marriage in Rimi, examining how media campaigns influence public awareness, community attitudes, and decision-making processes regarding child marriage.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing media campaigns aimed at reducing child marriage in Nigeria, the practice remains prevalent in rural areas like Rimi Local Government Area. While media advocacy has been employed to raise awareness and foster positive attitudes toward delaying marriage, the persistence of traditional practices, economic pressures, and the limited reach of media campaigns often dilute the potential impact. Furthermore, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the specific effectiveness of these media interventions in the region. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing how media advocacy in Rimi has influenced public attitudes toward child marriage and examining the factors that contribute to the success or failure of such campaigns in preventing child marriage.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is crucial in evaluating the effectiveness of media advocacy as a tool for addressing child marriage in rural Nigeria. Its findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, NGOs, and media practitioners seeking to design more effective campaigns to combat child marriage. By examining the strengths and weaknesses of current media interventions, the study offers practical recommendations for improving media strategies to influence public attitudes and drive social change. Additionally, the research contributes to the broader academic discourse on the role of media in social change, particularly in relation to gender and child rights.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on assessing the effectiveness of media advocacy in preventing child marriage in Rimi Local Government Area, Katsina State. It is limited to evaluating media content, public awareness, and attitudes within this specific context.
